Liposomes, originally known as smectic mesophases, are unilamellar or multilamellar spherical vesicles, mainly containing phospholipids from plant or animal sources. They were first discovered by A.D. Bangham in 1965. When phospholipids were dispersed in aqueous medium, they observed spontaneous self-assembled closed vesicles with concentric lipid bilayers and hydrophilic cores.
